Landscape Architecture
Magnetic Resonance Imaging Facility * Providence Medical Center
The MRI Facility at Providence Medical Center required special sensitivity through landscape architectural design. An imaging device in the center of the building emanates an extremely strong magnetic field which can be harmful to individuals wearing pacemakers. These forces are measured with "gouse lines", concentric magnetic contours whose force decreases as distance from the magnet increases. The Landscape Architect's challenge was to create a setting which simultaneously enhances the building and subtly keeps individuals away from the dangerous magnetic field. The result was a design whose form reflects the circular gouse line within which humans should not penetrate. Fred Glick led development of schematic design, final design and construction documents for all site improvements, planting and irrigation.
