John Day Dam Fish Sampling Facility
Fred Glick developed the landscape architectural design and supervised the irrigation design for this new Fish Sampling Facility just east of the Columbia River Gorge. The design was centered on a three thousand foot long flume for which Demuth Glick Consultants, Ltd. developed a symbolic landscape setting. The landscape was representative of the juxtaposition of natural and man-made features, specifically the river and the fish, versus the dam and need for irrigated landscapes, including orchards and vineyards, visible throughout the river corridor. Tree species included Lombardy Poplars as windbreaks common to the Columbia Gorge landscape, and Sycamores representing overside orchard trees capable of withstanding strong winds also common to the Gorge.
